Found an open-source project today that can turn your 1,000-page PDF into a private AI assistant.
It’s called AnythingLLM. It already has tens of thousands of stars on GitHub and is one of the more popular open-source AI knowledge-base projects of recent years. It’s built by Mintplex Labs, with the goal of letting regular people set up their own AI assistant quickly.
With AnythingLLM you can upload PDFs, Word files, Markdown and all kinds of documents, then ask the AI questions directly. Have it summarize a paper, pull the key points from a report, analyze material, or even write new content based on your knowledge base. Using RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), the AI doesn’t just answer general questions; it works from your private material.
Think of it as your own ChatGPT plus a private knowledge base.
For students, it can organize course material, papers and study notes. For designers, it can hold your case library, design guidelines and inspiration database. Developers and companies can use it to manage technical docs and internal knowledge.
Its biggest strength is local deployment: you can keep your data on your own device instead of uploading everything to a third-party service. It also supports many large language models, both local and cloud.
